A must see attraction for any Inverclyde visitor (and resident), Newark Castle lies on the south shore of the River Clyde in Port Glasgow.
Built in 1478 by George Maxwell, this beautiful structure showcases the best of Inverclyde history. In late C16th, the castle was inherited by Sir Patrick Maxwell. Sir Patrick expanded on the building in 1597 to form a three storey Renaissance mansion.
Now, Newark Castle is the property of Historic Scotland and sees thousands of visitors every year. You can find out more about the castle and its history on the Historic Scotland website.
